Phantom Ranch & Bright Angel Campground

Any trip to the Grand Canyon takes a good degree of planning. To spend the night in the Inner Canyon requires a little extra, but it is well worth the effort. Read through this section to assist you in your preparations for your trip to the "bottom."

I have also created a public Facebook Fan Page which includes Grand Canyon photos. You do not need to become a "Friend" to view the photo albums. If you choose to become a "Fan", there will be notifications when photos are added as hikes and time allow. I will also be adding photos from parks and areas throughout the southwest.

First of all, PLEASE NOTE that I am not associated in any way with Grand Canyon National Park Lodges (which operates Phantom Ranch Lodge), Grand Canyon National Park, or any of the other businesses and agencies listed within these pages. You will need to contact them directly (links and numbers are provided within these pages) to make any reservations.

Within this section, you'll find the following information:

  • Phantom Ranch weather - National Weather Service page specific to Phantom Ranch. This is the point forecast for the bottom of the Grand Canyon where an official weather station is maintained. Its location is near the River Ranger Station, located shortly after crossing the Silver Bridge on the Bright Angel Trail.
  • Fishing Regs & Info. There are special licenses required for the Colorado River. There is also information on temporary licenses for those who plan on a short visit.
  • Lodging & Campgrounds. lists and links the hotels, lodges, and commercial campgrounds available within the park boundaries and surrounding area, including Phantom Ranch. Grand Canyon Lodges has recently added an online reservation for the dormitory lodging.
  • Tours & Guide Services. If you are planning on hiking and would prefer someone to guide you and let them deal with the logistics, check out this page.
  • Pack Hauling Service. Duffel service. So you want a mule to carry your pack for you? Here's how to go about getting that done!
  • In-Park Shuttles & Transportation includes not only the transportation to get you here, such as rental cars, trains, and planes, but you'll also find information and schedules on the free Park Service in-park shuttle service. And for those of you who are planning to do a rim-to-rim hike and were wondering how to work out the vehicle shuttle, there is even a bus that provides transportation service back and forth from each rim for a fee.
  • Visitor Information Centers. provides links and addresses to all Chambers of Commerce that are within the Grand Canyon region.
  • National Park Organizations provides links to Grand Canyon National Park and it's official supporting agencies.
  • Grand Canyon Trivia and Facts for interesting information about Grand Canyon and the area.
  • Weather Info. There are dramatic differences in temperatures and precipitation between the North and South Rims, and especially between the rims and the Inner Gorge. A table on the page provides averages, and there are links to sites that provide up-to-date, current weather information. Weather is ALWAYS very changeable at the Canyon; be sure you are well prepared for anything you might get—year 'round.
  • Metric Calculators. Useful information for converting distances and temperatures to metric. Also included are sunset and sunrise times and moon phases.
