Photographing the Sedona Landscape

Exploring the sensual and majestic Sedona landscape awakens your creativity. From verdant creek beds to panoramic red rock vistas, unbelievable sunsets to vibrant wildflowers, roadside viewpoints to invigorating hiking trails—this is a place that inspires photography.

Capturing good photos of Red Rock Country isn’t difficult, but truly engaging and dramatic pictures take some care and thought. An amateur photographer needn’t merely copy what’s already been done by professionals for the postcards and calendars of Sedona. When you see something that inspires you, make it a fresh experience. Start by asking yourself: What intrigues me about this scene? Slow down, study it, and then experiment with ways to simplify and exaggerate that feeling that stopped you in the first place. The red rock region is perfect for discovering and expanding your unique creative vision.

Getting Ready

A few preparations are essential. First, buy a Red Rock Pass—daily, weekly or annual to match your needs. This allows you to park along roads in Coconino National Forest and at most trailheads. Some of the most popular destinations have separate entrance fees such as Slide Rock State Park, Red Rock Crossing/Crescent Moon Ranch Picnic Area, West Fork/Call of the Canyon, and the swimming hole at Grasshopper Point. The U.S. Forest Service Red Rock Ranger District website provides information on the Red Rock Pass Program.

Next, get a detailed map of Sedona’s roads, trails, and attractions. With dozens of scenic viewpoints and more than 100 hiking trails in the area, this is vital. Different maps provide different levels of information; choose the one that best serves your sense of adventure. Stores selling books or outdoor gear usually offer the best selection.
