As so often happens these days with the aging Transcanyon Pipeline, another break occurred on August 29th north of Phantom Ranch along the North Kaibab Trail.
The pipeline has been repaired but is being tested and may still have some issues. New breaks often occur once the water has been turned back on and is running through the waterline again.
Phantom Ranch Lodge is CLOSED. No commercial services are available, including lodging, food service, and store.
Bright Angel Campground near Phantom Ranch is open, but water will not be available from water spigots there, so water must be taken from Bright Angel Creek and treated. Cottonwood Campground’s water spigots are also off and water must be taken from Bright Angel Creek and treated.
I always highly recommend hikers carry water treatment when hiking in the Canyon for emergencies such as these. The Manzanita Day Use Area’s water is off as well.
Drinking water is available at the following locations: Mile and a Half, Three Mile, and Indian Garden on the Bright Angel Trail, and Supai Tunnel on the North Kaibab Trail.
