Looking for a great summer read? I picked up “The Grand Canyon Reader” on a recent visit to Telluride, and have yet to put it down. In this volume, Lance Newman, a Professor of English and longtime commercial river guide has cherry-picked an impressive selection of excerpts from a few of the seminal works written about his beloved canyon – from Terry Tempest Williams to John Wesley Powell, Bert Loper to Wallace Stegner. As an organizing principle, most of the adventures and their resulting epiphanies take place on the Colorado River.
Whether heavenly or harrowing, the experiences cataloged in this book will whisk you off to one of the most iconic landscapes in North America. In preparing for my own imminent river trip, I couldn’t have found a better companion to put me in the right frame of mind for what is a reliably life-altering journey.
