Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, but at Grand Canyon, love is always in the air. Whether exchanging vows or honeymooning, many couples turn to the Canyon as the perfect place to take the plunge (figuratively we hope).
However, the experience is not always peaches and crème. Honeymooners Glen & Bessie Hyde put their marital vows to the ultimate test in 1929 during their ill-fated solo journey through the Canyon on a homemade boat.
When they failed to emerge from the Canyon on schedule, a search party was dispatched. Their abandoned boat was found—but no trace of the Hydes. Bessie’s diary, and witness accounts from encounters upstream, indicated that the hardships of life on the turbulent river placed a severe strain on the lover’s relationship.
But don’t let that keep you from bringing your sweetheart to the Grand Canyon. A stroll along the rim can be a great bonding experience—for better or worse.
To learn more about the Hydes I strongly recommend Brad Dimock’s award-wining, Sunk Without A Sound.
