With Grand Canyon’s first snowfall remaining (disturbingly) elusive, short days, thin crowds, the random Santa hat, and a decked-out lobby in the historic El Tovar Hotel are the only signs that the winter holidays are upon us.
It’s not unusual these days to see locals and visitors alike traipsing about in shorts and t-shirts—a clear indicator that Mother Nature is changing her mood.
Nevertheless, and certainly if you’re into off-season hiking, the park remains a wonderful place to visit as the final days of 2017 tick away. Though if seeking surefire seasonal cheer, a hot beverage in front of the El Tovar’s crackling fireplace might be the only sure bet.
