Take a fresh two inches of winter powder, add an exquisitely sculpted cloud bank, and throw a few rays of pinprick sunlight on the signature rock formations, and…voila! You have a valentine greeting from the canyon that would be hard to top.
The sunrise on February 14th went a long ways towards setting the mood on the annual day set aside for lovers. Indeed, not a few couples were drifting up and down the rim trail in front of the El Tovar Hotel, with wide smiles and hands clasped. Given the lack of precipitation the park has experienced this winter, the dusting was a gift as well to the canyon’s plants and critters. Here are a few photographs of the spectacle.
