Havasupai Gardens (Formerly Indian Garden) Campground, Grand Canyon, AZ

Update: According to Grand Canyon Trust “In November 2022, Indian Garden was officially renamed Havasupai Gardens “

“After years of advocacy by Havasupai grassroots and tribal leaders, Indian Garden (originally called “Ha’a Gyoh” in the Havasupai language) in Grand Canyon National Park has been officially renamed “Havasupai Gardens.” This change marks a significant advancement in Native representation and education for Grand Canyon National Park.

Earlier this year, the Havasupai Tribal Council passed a resolution requesting this formal name change for Havasupai Gardens. The National Park Service consulted with other regional tribes and heard strong support for the Havasupai proposal. The park service then passed the name change recommendation along to the U.S. Board of Geographic Names, which voted unanimously to accept the change in November 2022.”

Havasupai Gardens (Formerly Indian Garden) is located on the Bright Angel Trail approximately halfway between the South Rim and the Colorado River. The campground is smaller than Bright Angel Campground with 15 sites. There are 14 small group sites accommodating 1 – 6 people and 1 large group site accommodating 7 – 11 people.

Situated along the Bright Angel Trail, roughly halfway between the South Rim and Phantom Ranch, Indian Garden Campground is an oasis in the heart of the Grand Canyon.

The campground is surrounded by cottonwood trees which provide shade for the campsites. The area is so named because the Havasupai people used to farm in the area, using the natural spring for irrigation.

It’s an ideal spot for rest and recovery before continuing the challenging hike to the canyon floor or back up to the rim. There’s potable water, restrooms, and emergency phone service available at this campground. It’s an excellent place for wildlife viewing as well.
